Faster Gossiping on Butter ies?
نویسنده
چکیده
Gossiping has been considered intensively for butterries and \regular" butterries (which have no wrap-around connections). In the telephone communication model, for a butterry of order k, the best previous gossiping algorithms require 2 1 = 2 k and 3 k communication rounds, respectively. By new asymptotic methods we break through these bounds, proving new bounds of 2 1 = 4 k + o(k) and 2 1 = 2 k + o(k).

Non-random dispersal in the butter y Maniola jurtina: implications for metapopulation models
The dispersal patterns of animals are important in metapopulation ecology because they a¡ect the dynamics and survival of populations.Theoretical models assume random dispersal but little is known in practice about the dispersal behaviour of individual animals or the strategy by which dispersers locate distant habitat patches. In the present study, we released individual meadow brown butter£ies...
متن کاملApproximation algorithms for information dissemination problems
Broadcasting and gossiping are known to be NP hard problems This paper deals with approximation algorithms for such problems We consider both round complexity and step complexity in the telephone model After an overview of previously derived approximation algorithms we present new strategies for broadcasting and gossiping in any graphs Broadcasting strategies are based on the construction of ed...
متن کاملThe roles of island area per se and habitat diversity in the species±area relationships of four Lesser Antillean faunal groups
1. We analysed the relationships between species richness, island area, and habitat diversity for birds, bats, butter ̄ies, and reptiles and amphibians on 19 islands in the Lesser Antilles. Habitat diversity was quanti®ed by Simpson's index based on the total areas of ®ve vegetation types on each island. Island area varied over two orders of magnitude (13±1510 km) and habitat diversity varied be...
متن کاملSex-linked inheritance of host-plant specialization in a polyphagous butter ̄y
I investigated the genetic background of intraspeci¢c variation in oviposition speci¢city in the generalist butter£y Polygonia c-album. Using reciprocal crosses between two populations that di¡er in their degree of specialization, I show that speci¢city is strongly sex-linked. This indicates that genes determining this di¡erence are located primarily on the paternally inherited X-chromosome. Th...
متن کاملVariation of eye size in butter ̄ies: inter- and intraspeci®c patterns
Differences in behaviour, such as the mate-locating tactic, may favour the evolution of interspeci®c and intersexual differences in the structure of the visual system. This notion was tested by examining the relationships between eye size, body size, sex and mate-locating tactic in 16 species of butter ̄ies. The 16 species were grouped in eight phylogenetically close pairs that differed in the m...
